Neville was only a year old when Voldemort chose Harry Potter as the perceived threat and killed Lily and James. It was a matter of weeks before the Lestranges and Barty Crouch Jr. came looking for their master and Neville was in the next room as his parents were tortured until their minds broke. Neville was put into the custody of his paternal grandmother, a fierce woman who loved him dearly but expected too much. Under the pressure of his parents' legacies and the lack of a real father figure, Neville grew to be a nervous, self-conscious boy who collapsed under pressure and socialized poorly. Augusta's peers had grown children and Neville didn't play with kids his own age until Hogwarts. By then he was a fluffy awkward boy, a perfect target for bullies.

It wasn't until the DA that Neville began to come into his own. There was a difference between having others believe in you and having others expect something of you. The low-pressure tutelage, among friends, helped Neville learn some basic skills and earned his loyalty to the members of the DA. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione ran off after Horcruxes, Neville, Ginny, and Luna bonded over their rebellion against the Carrows siblings. Neville became a man that year, eating little to avoid poisoning and sticking his neck out for smaller children. He was beaten and tortured but he lived up to the example of his parents and even facing defeat, thinking Harry Potter was dead, Neville stood proud and defeated Naigini, the last Horcrux.

Neville had a slower time out the door than the rest of his peers. He found out, after the war, that the Death Eaters in charge of the Ministry had executed his parents. Neville grieved for a while but came to terms with the loss he had been trying to cope with all of his life. He began working with the Aurors, helping to round up the remaining Death Eaters. After a while he started working less at the ministry and more at home. It took him a while to take the steps that most go through to grow up. He lived with gran for a long time and has only recently moved into a place of his own, a house on the outskirts of London with a small greenhouse off the back. He works only part time for the ministry and has his own business growing difficult plants to sell to potions manufacturers and apothecaries. Gran is doing well, but her home got too crowded for Neville when Aberforth moved in and they started being... frisky. Neville works out regularly something he only started doing because it was a coping mechanism in a Death Eater run Hogwarts. He eats healthier because the last year at Hogwarts got him used to eating a lot less, for fear of being poisoned and from missing meals as punishment. He also practices martial arts, which gives him confidence and discipline. The goblins want the sword back, but they aren't going to get it.
